Rebuttal of Acacia Mining’s Response to ‘Broken Bones, Broken Promises’ (2015)

14 December 2015

RAID and MiningWatch Canada correct assertions made by Acacia Mining (Acacia), a subsidiary of Barrick Gold, in its public reaction to their 17 November press release, Broken Bones, Broken Promises. The company refers to ‘factual inaccuracies’ in material about its subsidiary, the North Mara Gold Mine Ltd (NMGML) in Tanzania, and claims that MiningWatch Canada and RAID have repeatedly failed to engage with Acacia, NMGML, and its local NGO Search for Common Ground. Both of these assertions are unfounded. In their rebuttal, RAID and MiningWatch express concerns about the deeply-flawed company grievance mechanism and call for safeguards to uphold the complainants’ rights.
